Assessment Trip

June 2007

In June 2007 five members of EWB-FC traveled to Dinamarca to begin understanding the need that prompted the request for a water distribution system. Currently the primary drinking water supply is four shallow hand pump wells, all of which tested positive for illness causing coliform bacteria on this trip.

Community leaders understand the relationship between water and health, which prompted their original request to EWB. Additionally, problems in other Shipibo villages have raised concern that a petroleum spill on the near-by river or unregulated mining activity may contaminate their water supply in the future.

Although drinking water brought EWB-FC to Dinamarca, it quickly became clear an urgent priority of the community leadership was their property boundary. The village has legal title to their land, but there are no monuments marking the location on the ground. For more information about the ongoing survey project click here.
