Ceramic Filters

June 2008

In June 2008 EWB-FC implemented a water filtration system in Dinamarca. A village elected committee of six people was trained for five days on the construction and maintenance of the filter systems. Each home received a ceramic water filter and was trained by the committee on its use. These filters will remove illness causing bacteria from the village drinking water. Therefore, we expect to see a significant reduction in the incidence of water born illness throughout the village.

Ceramic filters are a semi-sustainable solution for this area. They will provide safe drinking water for 3-5 years, and replacement filters are available nearby. However, due to the cost of filters many families may not be able to purchase replacements. This ceramic water filter project has allowed EWB-FC to provide a temporary solution to water quality while continuing to work with Dinamarca on their long-term goals.
